The Grand Mercure Dongguan Humen, designed by Arthur Wing Fat Chan, is a remarkable example of transforming an established business hotel into a modern boutique-style oasis. The concept behind this design, called Lively Metropolis, draws inspiration from mutualism and energy, incorporating subtle curved lines and the elegance of dancing orchids.
One of the most challenging aspects of this project was to give the hotel a new and unique image while maintaining its functionality as a business hotel. The entrance lobby sets the tone for the entire design, with new illuminated curved staircases and a modern chandelier modular creating a vivid centerpiece under the double ceiling. The seating arrangements in the lobby are designated in a circular pool-like fashion, with sleek lines and furniture that reflect the same shape as the dark mirrored ceiling.
Natural light is carefully controlled through the use of shutters and glazed curtain walls, while artificial LED lighting is strategically placed to highlight specific areas. The combination of polished linear grain natural stones and glazed pieces of work creates a modern and sophisticated look. The overall atmosphere is given a warm feel through the use of contrasting neutral shades with sharp yellow accents. The main theme is further enhanced by incorporating yellow dancing orchids throughout the design.
Technologically, the design utilizes materials such as marble, glazing, LED lighting, and louver windows. The lobby area spans an impressive 700 square meters, providing ample space for guests to relax and socialize.
The Grand Mercure Dongguan Humen project was completed in December 2013 and is located in Dongguan Humen, China. The design team, led by Arthur Wing Fat Chan, included Gavin Hsu and Byron To.
This exceptional design was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2015 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The Grand Mercure Dongguan Humen truly exemplifies excellence and introduces a sense of wonder and amazement to its guests.
